Customer Review: Not built very well
While the the has run reasonably well the recoil starter has broken twice so far. The recoil starter is attached to the engine shroud with RIVETs! I haven't been able to find replacement parts or service manual on the web. Coleman's web site no longer mentions generators, so much for support! Next time I'll just go with Honda. This price is about double what I paid for my Coleman at a Home Depot and I didn't have to pay shipping! You can find these much cheaper on eBay. Also, my only experience with Grady's Ace Hardware has been very bad, I'll never do business with them again. I'm surprised that Amazon still carries them.
Customer Review: Coleman 25KW standby generator
This standby generator is huge and weighs about 1/2 ton so needs special delivery. I bought it in 2006 and have only used todate for 250 hours. The reasons I chose it was that it runs off natural gas, rotates at 1800rpm and is powered by a 4 cyl Ford industrial engine. It needs a GE Zenith ZTX Transfer switch. It is capable of delivering over 100 amps at 240v even using natural gas, so long as one has the gas utility company supply a 2 psi delivery rather than the usual 10 inch pressure system. The only problems I have had resulted from unclear directions from the now defunct Coleman Powermate customer service. For the first oil change I used 10/30w multigrade Penzoil which caused the black lithium grease to flush off of the big ends and mess up the pressure sender module. This caused it to shut down because it sensed a low oil pressure situation. Going back to the proper Castrol HD 30 weight oil solved that problem. After Hurricane Ike, when the generator started automatically as designed, it later shut down automatically when utility power was restored. I then found an error message on the operator panel which read "Watchdog Fail" and "Recycle Power to Rest". There is no mention of this fault condition in the owners manual. This was when I discovered Powermate was out of business. By removing and replacing the small cartridge fuse for the control panel I managed to unfreeze the control panel. Maybe this is what the "Recycle Power to Reset" instruction means. The generator is now ready for automatic switch on again. This generator cannot be heard from inside the house. Engine parts should be available from any Ford dealer as it is basically a modified Ford Ranger engine. It was obviously well designed as its safe use controls are comprehensive and have been my main problem of ownership. As a whole house standby generator it is the equivalent of main utility supply, runs my two 3 ton AC units without a hickcup, but the cost of running it is more than our regular electric utility provider service. Living as I do on the Texas Gulf Coast this generator is my biggest reason to "hunker down" for a CAT 3 hurricane. I think, with care, it will prove very reliable and parts most likely needing replacement can be purchased from their OEM suppliers (Ford). It would be interesting to learn why Coleman Powermate went belly up. I suspect that after Ford withdrew their LRG-425 engine that GM required payment upfront for the intended Vortex replacement. I also suspect that there were s few design problems associated with the change over. For me, the fact that the GM engine was a 3600rpm unit was a downer and made it similar to the Koehler 30Kw generator. I am a happy owner of my PM402511 unit but a bit frustrated with how Coleman backed out of its 3 year warranty. For a city homeowner, propane is probably a forbidden fuel so natural gas is the way to go. People buying gasoline generators probably underestimate the amount of gas they need to store, the difficulty buying it after a disaster, and the dangers of storing it. This Coleman Powermate is definitely a loss for us all.

Today, finding a true level of an area is commonly done by using modern apparatus such as spirit levels or laser levels. These methods actually work quite well but there are more ways to find an accurate level of an area without using expensive and sophisticated equipment.

Years ago, builders would find true levels by employing a very simple technique which only involved materials such as water and tubing. This is more commonly known as a Water Level and is actually still used by builders today as it offers great accuracy.

There are many uses for a water level like, suppose you need to find the level of two separate rooms in different positions of a house, or maybe you're working on a site where you are setting out and need to establish a datum to work to. A water level will help you achieve all of these things with ease.

For those of you who want to find a cheap and very effective method of establishing true level, read on! Firstly, go and find yourself a good length of plastic tubing. A water hose works absolutely fine for this and you can pick lengths of hose up from any DIY or garden centre for relatively cheap.

Once you have your length of hose, position it on site or wherever you hope to achieve your true level. Make sure one end of the hose is at either side of the two points you want to get your level from. Fill the hose with water but only enough so that you leave about a couple of feet of air at the ends. Hold one end of the hose at the position you want to use as your 'level reference' and then with the aid of a helper, get them to hold the other end of the hose up at the other point you want to establish your next reference point. Mark this clearly with chalk or pencil etc.

Here's the trick to this!

While your helper is holding the hose up at his reference point, move your hose up or down until the level of water in the hose matches the level of the first reference point that is to be transferred. When you have done this task, the line of water in the hose at the second reference point where your helper is will be identical as to where the level is at the first reference point.

Stick with me on this as I know it can be very difficult to visualise this technique without actually seeing a diagram to illustrate it. But trust me when I say this, get this method right and you will always establish true level or datum lines wherever you are working. By the way, for those of you who aren't sure of what a datum line is; A Datum line is the true level line of reference that all other trades, for lets say on a building site for example, will work to.

This is highly important as without establishing a true datum line, it would be very difficult to establish any form of uniformed level. You can use this method to transfer level to as many points as you wish but for higher accuracy, always be sure to transfer your reference points from the first, original point. This will eliminate any chance of accumulative errors.

So there you have it, a great and very accurate tool to use, and one that is only a fraction of the cost of an expensive, state of the art laser or rotary level. So go build your new water level today for immaculate and accurate workmanship.

Briggs & Stratton 71010 100 Amp Automatic Transfer Switch with Service Entrance Disconnect and ACCM

Designed for reliability against back feeding to the utility lines during an outage, the Briggs & Stratton 100 Amp automatic transfer switch features a service entrance disconnect and ACCM (AC Power Control Module). With the ability to run up to a 4-ton air conditioner with no worries of the generator shutting down, the switch is able to supply power to all circuits of your home or small business, and automatically manages the critical loads. Custom made exclusively for Briggs & Stratton Power Products standby generator systems, the switch reduces the overall energy cost by giving you the power you need exactly when you need it. The switch is adequate for either indoor or outdoor installation for added versatility.

The Preliminary Tool Kit

1. Crosscut handsaw, 22": This is technically a panel saw. It is useful for breaking down large planks you before flatten them.

2. Backsaw, 10": Presumably a carcase saw and filed crosscut, this tool will make your finishing cuts and is typically used with the bench hook.

3. Dovetail saw, 8": We prefer a 15-point saw that is filed for ripping cuts.

4. Jack plane: Hayward seems to prefer this plane for processing rough lumber. A 14"-long plane is typical.

5. Fore plane: Hayward seems to prefer this size plane (about 18") for shooting the edges of boards instead of a jointer plane.

6. Smoothing plane: The smoothing plane is the last plane to touch the work before scrapers or sandpaper. A 10"-long plane is a typical size.

7. Firmer chisels, 1/4" and 3/4": These were once common tools without the beveled edges that are common in catalogs today.

8. Warrington hammer: These small hammers have a cross-pane on one end for starting brad nails. Very handy and still available.

9. Mallet, 5" head. For driving chisels. Beech is the preferred wood.

10. Nail punch, fine: A small tool for setting nail heads below the wood's surface with a few short blows.

11. Pincers: A handy tool for pulling errant nails.

12. Screwdrivers, 8" and 3": Traditionally, these would be straight drivers. You'll also need Phillips, square-drive and others.

13. Cutting gauge: A marking tool with a knife for making its mark (instead of a pin).

14. Ratcheting brace, 8": Still useful, even in a power-tool shop.

15. Auger bit, 3/8".

16. Twist or brad-point bit, 3/16".

17. Countersink bit.

18. Center bit, 3/4": A bit for making flat-bottomed holes. Now Forstners are the standard.

19. Brad awl: Designed to start holes for nails and small screws.

20. Try square, 6".

21. Card scraper: This tool cleans up tear-out left by the smoothing plane.

22. Oilstone: Buy one with coarse and fine grits. Waterstones are now common.

23. Folding rule: Or a tape measure.

Useful Additional Tools

1. Bow saw, 12": This saw is useful for deep and curved cuts.

2. Keyhole saw: Used for fine work, particularly keyholes. These days one with a Japanese tooth pattern are more common and useful.

3: Coping saw: Useful for clearing out waste between dovetails and shallow curved cuts.

4. Bullnose plane: A now-uncommon tool for cleaning up rabbets.

5. Shoulder plane: A useful tool for trimming the cheeks and shoulders of tenons.

6. Compass plane: If you do circular work, this plane is helpful. Others never need it.

7. Rabbet plane: For the woodworker who prefers to cut rabbets by hand.

8. Toothing plane: A useful plane for roughing up surfaces prior to veneering.

9. Plow plane: A useful hand tool for making grooves and small rabbets. Not found in a typical power-tool shop.

10.Firmer chisels, 1/8" and 1/2".

11. Paring chisel, 1-1/2": Useful for a wide variety of fine cuts. Beveled edges are typical.

12.Mortise chisels, 5/16": If you work with machine-processed stock, you'll probably want a 1/4" tool instead.

13. Patternmaker's hammer: Like the Warrington next to it, but smaller.

14. Marking gauge: A gauge with a pin used for marking across and with the grain.

15. Mortise gauge: A marking gauge with two cutters to mark the two walls of a mortise simultaneously.

16. Spokeshave, wood body: Useful for curved shapes in easy-to-cut woods.

17. Auger bits, 1/4" and 1/2".

18. Center bits, 1" or as required: Again, substitute Forstners. Buy them as you need them.

19. Sash clamps, 36": Begin with one pair and purchase as needed.

20.C-clamps: A modern equivalent would also be F-style clamps.

21. Handscrews: Useful for all sorts of tapered and odd workholding needs.

22. Try square or combination square, 12".

23. Miter square: Useful for laying out and checking mitered work.

24. Sliding bevel, 8": For marking and measuring angles other than 90.

26. Gouge: A large tool for removing large amounts of wood quickly - not a carving tool.

26. Surform tool: It looks like a cheese grater and is used for shaping curved and compound work, such as cabriole legs.

27. Router plane: Used to trim tenon cheeks, deepen grooves and to cut hinge mortises.

28. Dividers: Basic tools that step off dovetails or other joinery.

There are many RV parts that you should be familiar with, especially if you are a RV owner, and the RV generator is one of the most important of all. They are the devices in the vehicles that convert mechanical energy into electrical energy, and the process used here is based on the relationship between magnetism and electricity.

Learn About Your Options

The first thing you are going to want to do is learn about the different RV generator models that are out there so that you can choose the one that is going to be best suited to you and your needs. The most popular are diesel, propane and gasoline.

There are super quiet models which run almost completely silently. There are also all inverter generator models which feature a load dependant throttle so that they only run exactly as fast as needed for whatever your specific load requirement is at that time.

Where to Shop

There are definitely a lot of options available when it comes to where to shop for your RV generator. Funroads is one company in particular that you can go to for a generator for your recreational vehicle, and they actually offer one of the largest selections today. They have a knowledgeable and experienced staff that is there, with members who are more than willing and able to help you out step by step through this process.

Remember that although most models of generator are small and compact, you can choose a larger sized model if this is going to benefit you more. You really need to take your own personal needs into consideration here in order to be able to choose the RV generator that is going to be best suited to you.

You also want to remember that in order to determine the size of generator you are going to need you will have to calculate the expected power consumption of all the utilities inside of the RV. Determine how much power you are going to be using on a regular basis, for instance maybe you like to blow dry your hair or listen to music in your RV, and you will have to consider this when trying to decide what size generator to purchase.

If you are not sure about which RV generator to go with then you should know that there are some experienced and knowledgeable professionals out there who are going to be able to help you out here. Even just by going into your local RV retailer you will be able to speak to a representative who can help guide you to making the most intelligent and informative decision here. Just be sure to take your time and make sure that the generator you choose is going to last you and offer enough power for your RV.

Triton Generators Automatic Transfer Switch - 120/208V, 3-Pole Three Phase, 800 Amps

The ZTG transfer switch is designed for residential and light commercial standby generator applications, incorporating a double-throw, mechanically interlocked contactor mechanism.

For a gasoline generator you should start and run the generator with at least a half rated load for a minimum of two hours every month. It is extremely important that you run it with this minimum rated load. Generators are designed to run with a load placed on them. Our motor home has a 4,000 watt generator so I can either turn the roof air conditioner on in the summer time, which is about 2,000 watts or I can use a couple of small portable electric heaters if it's cold out. It's always better to let your generator run for longer periods than it is for short periods. Check your generator owner's manual for load ratings specific to your unit.

Other maintenance intervals for generators are based on usage. Your generator set will have an hour meter so you can monitor the usage. Consult your owner's manual for maintenance intervals.

Changing the oil and filters on a regular scheduled basis and for seasonal changes is just as important for your generator as it is for your automobile. For extended storage requirements consult your generator owner's manual.

NOTE*- Carbon Monoxide Poisoning and your generator:
The onboard generator makes your RV fully self-contained. It allows you access to 120- volts when there is no shore power available, but keep in mind that carbon monoxide is deadly! Test the carbon monoxide detector every time you use the RV. Know what the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are:

1) Dizziness

2) Vomiting

3) Nausea

4) Muscular twitching

5) Intense headache

6) Throbbing in the temples

7) Weakness and sleepiness

8) Inability to think coherently

If you or anyone else experiences any of these symptoms get to fresh air immediately. If the symptoms persist seek medical attention. Shut the generator down and do not operate it until it has been inspected and repaired by a professional.

Happy and Safe Camping,

Since the oil companies raised gas prices I have seen more and more articles about the benefits of using high-octanes gasoline versus the question of whether it is a waste of money. Your primary considerations in choosing fuel octanes levels are the manufacturers recommendation and the compression ratio of the engine. As a very general rule, an engine with compression ratio of 9.0:1 or over will benefit from high octanes gasoline, and the higher the compression the more the engine will benefit from successively higher-octanes levels. The benefit is both in power production and lack of detonation.

Modern engine-management systems use knock sensors to detect engine detonation (aka pinging, knocking), which then transmit the information to the electronic control unit, (ECU) which in turn retards ignition timing to compensate for octanes deficiency. The trade-off, unfortunately, is a reduction in power output. One way to offset this power loss is by installing performance exhausts, high-grade cold air intakes and quality air filters. Performance exhaust systems give about 1 to 2% increase in fuel economy as they reduce impurities in the cylinder, thus achieving a purer gas and oxygen mixture. Purer burn results in performance boost and fuel efficiency. Cold air intakes and performance air filters on the other hand, supply the engine with more quality air which improves engine power and in turn enhances the vehicles fuel economy. With an automatic transmission, low-octanes fuel can also result in a distinct and very noticeable hesitation when accelerating off idle, this is when the knock sensors sense the detonation and the ECU retards timing abruptly to prevent engine damage.

There are many factors that affect octanes requirements, and altitude is one of them. However, the affect of altitude on octanes requirements is very slight on modern engines.

Modern engine management systems can accommodate this adjustment, and in some recent studies, the octane number requirement was reduced by 0.2-0.5 (R =M)/2 per 300m increase in altitude. The larger reduction on older engines was due to:

" reduced air density provides lower combustion temperature and pressure.

" fuel is metered according to air volume, consequently as density decreases the stoichiometry moves to rich, with a lower octanes number requirement.

" manifold vacuum controlled spark advance, and reduced manifold vacuum results in less spark advance

Another factor is, U.S. oil companies tend to use better detergent additive packages in higher-octanes fuels even though detergent is blind to octanes level. Many engines have a long suffered from loading up with carbon on the tops of the pistons, which is one of many factors that can increase octane requirements, sometimes beyond the operational ability of the knock-sensing system to compensate, resulting in detonation. So, from the stand-point of your engine, you should be running a high-quality gasoline additives periodically regardless of the octane fuel you are using along with upgrading the quality of air that is coming into your engine through your air intake system as well as leaving the engine through your exhaust system.

Are you are looking for high powered cars but don't want to drain your savings? You should try to visit several government car auctions sponsored by police impounds.

Yes, you heard it right. You can buy cars in an auto auction held by government agencies. You are probably wondering why these agencies would get involved in auto auctions. Well it is because there is an increasing number of seized cars, and these cars can occupy a huge space in the parking lots. Consequently, various departments have been facing problems on how to take care of these seized cars, and above all, where are they going to keep them? Hence, they now decided to conduct auto auctions.

Where the Cars Are Coming From

Most of the cars being sold in most government auto auctions are police impound cars. Either because of nonpayment of tax liabilities of the car owner, or these cars were used in the commission of a crime. Hence, these are impounded by the police. But it's not just that. These government auto auctions do not just sell those seized cars by law enforcement agencies. They also sell cars repossessed by financial institutions because of failure to pay their loan obligations.

What is good about these car auctions is that you can actually buy your dream car at an amazing very low price. Most of these cars have about 80 to 90 percent lower price than its actual market price. Thus you can save thousands of bucks. You will surely get your neighbors' heads turning with your car without them knowing you actually paid only half of the price.

There is not a single truth on the issues that most cars in government auto auctions are not in good operational condition. You would probably have some doubts whether you are buying a total junk. Well, there is absolutely no truth about that. In fact, most of these cars are slightly used. You can likewise see that most of these cars have very low mileage. If, however, you are still in doubt, you can bring a mechanic along with you in visiting this car auctions to help you check the condition of the car. You can also conduct some technical inspections before you decide to purchase the car. Most auto auctions actually offer invites to possible bidders for a free test drive to check the unit before the auction day.

It is really worth every single penny you're going to spend in a government car auction sponsored by police impounds. These auto auctions can help you own your dream car.

Make new discoveries and learn more handy tips about public car auctions such as where to find such auctions near your home and how to get great bargains for your car deals.
